Who started Father’s Day and why?
Traditionally, Father’s Day began in the USA in 1908, when a memorial was held for the tragic loss of 361 men in a mining accident. The same year when Mother’s Day was newly established and gaining popularity and it was decided that fathers deserve the same acknowledgment. Sorona Smart Dodd is the name behind the campaign for equal honour, she held her first Father’s Day event on 19th June 1910 with church celebrations.

Father’s Day is commonly celebrated worldwide in June. Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, and Fiji all hold this event for Dad’s in September; in order to align similarly with America.

Ms Janet Heyden, was the force behind allowing Dad a chance to be showered with affection. She was also the key movement behind Mother’s Day. Back in 1925, Ms Janet Heyden organised small gifts to get delivered to elderly men who were alone in the hospital. This traditional theme continues, where gifts are still given on Father’s Day to show appreciation.
