Children and the Great Outdoors

Children and the Great Outdoors

With the school holidays coming to an end, we wanted to do a shout out to all those children returning to school and also to those starting school for the very first time! How exciting!

Gardening and the great outdoors are so important for children. It offers them a fun filled activity outside in the fresh air and also teaches them so much. It teaches them about nature and the interaction between plants and animals and also about the relationship between humans and nature.

We love nothing more than seeing a child’s face light up at the sight of a beautifully coloured butterfly. Or the look of excitement and confusion as they touch the furry stems of a lavender plant. Next time you’re out in the garden, take you’re children with you and watch the delight on their faces.

Here is a fun list of plant facts for all the children out there :-)

1.Bamboo can be a fast growing plant, some types can grow almost a metre in just one day!
2.Around 2000 different types of plants are used by humans to make food.
3.Onions might taste good but they can be painful to chop. A gas is released when you cut onions that irritates you eyes, the tears you produce while this happens are your body’s way of washing it from your eyes.
4.Some plants are carnivores, gaining nutrients by eating various small insects and spiders. A well known example of a carnivorous plant is the Venus Flytrap.

Green Thumb Gifts has a beautiful range of gifts available for children of all ages. Take a look!
