To get the most out of your potted citrus plant, you will need to give it regular care and attention. Below are a list of the most important factors that we believe will give your citrus plant a long and healthy life!
This citrus plant family needs full sun, this means placing them in the sunniest possible place in your garden or on your balcony. Where you place them in your garden will also need to be sunny during the winter, as this is when they bear fruit.
2. DRAINAGE
The pot will need to have several large draining holes at the base and be slightly elevated from ground level, as citrus plants like well drained soil.
3. POTING MIX
Buy good quality potting mix and make sure you have enough to fill about 4cm from the top. For plants that are going to be in a pot for a long period of time it may be best to add about 10% soil to the mix. This prevents slumping in the potting mix.
4. ONGOING CARE
Potted citrus require ongoing care; they need to be watered two to three times a week. In very hot windy weather conditions your citrus may need daily watering, especially if your tree is in flower or starting to bear fruit. Citrus plants also need to be well nourished; the best way to achieve this is to use a complete citrus food. You can apply this to your tree in small amounts, once a month between August and mid autumn. When you fertilize make sure to water very well and to keep away pests regularly spray horticultural oil on the leaves, we recommend Pest Oil.
