When is Mother's Day? 

Many Australians celebrate Mother's Day by showing their appreciation for the achievements and efforts of mothers and mother figures. It is observed annually in Australia on the second Sunday of May. This year Mother's Day 2023 will fall on Sunday, 14th May.

Why do we celebrate Mother's Day? 

Australia first celebrated Mother’s Day in 1924, when Sydney woman Janet Heyden began the tradition because she wanted to support the lonely, elderly mothers at a hospital she visited. Ms Heyden asked schools and businesses to donate gifts to the women at the hospital, many of whom had lost their husbands and sons in World War I or had never been wives or mothers because of the war.

Mother's Day is an occasion that is also celebrated in various parts of the world to express respect, honour, and love towards mothers. The day is an event to honour the contribution of mothers and acknowledge the efforts of maternal bonds and the role of mothers in our society.
